Yao Fei is an expert archer and was a mentor to Oliver Queen, and a prisoner on the island, Lian Yu, having been considered extremely dangerous by the Chinese government. He was last shown as an employee of Edward Fyers who's unit had come to dispose of all the criminals held on the island by the Chinese military.
Biography
Slade Wilson finds Yao Fei
Not much is known about Yao Fei's past but that he was once a soldier and then a prisoner on the prison on the island, Lian Yu for unknown reasons until around 1999. After Edward Fyers's unit had come to dispose of all the inmates on the island. Fyers spared Fei most likely because he was trying to convince Fei to join him with Fei declining. About a year after being captured by Fyers, Slade was put in a cell with Yao Fei. Slade helped Fei escape his cell. The two went to go find Slade's partner, Bill. However, it turned out that Bill joined Fyers. The two then escape Fyer's camp together. It isn't known what exactly happened after that but Fei and Wilson had plans on escaping the island together on the supply plane. [1]
In 2007, He appears at the end of the episode as a green hooded figure wielding a bow and arrow. He hits Oliver Queen on the side of his chest with an arrow.[2] Fei who appeared to be attacking Oliver was actually helping him. He takes him to his hideout at a cave where Oliver awakens. Oliver asks him Why he shot him with to which Fei responds in mandarin "To protect you". Fei makes Oliver drink the water then quickly pulls the Arrow out of his chest. Oliver while Fei is sleeping, runs off. Fei finds Oliver trapped in a net. Fei calls him a fool telling him that the island is too dangerous for a lone man ,then frees him from the net. Fei warns him that "they" will kill him then runs off with Oliver following.[3]Later, Fei arrives at the hideout to see Oliver looking at a photo of Laurel. He brings a cage(made out of sticks) with a bird inside and puts it beside Oliver and says "Shengcún". When Oliver asks what that means he repeats himself not explaining what it means then walks off. During flashback, Fei is sitting by a fire at the hideout toasting a bird's leg on a stick. Oliver awakens and attempts to take a grab at the stick but Fei single-handedly throws him aside. Fei then hints at Oliver to kill the bird but Oliver refuses. Fei responds again with "Shengcún". The flashback later continues with Oliver begging Fei for food. Fei watches as Oliver proceeds to kill the bird. While he eats the bird, Fei approaches saying "Shengcún". Fei tells Oliver that "Shengcún" doesn't mean bird but that it means survive. Oliver is surprised at the fact that he speaks English. Fei tells Oliver that a bird shouldn't be the last thing he kills if he wants to survive on the island. He holds up Laurel's photo telling Oliver to forget her and tells him he will not survive if all he does is stare at her photo.[4]
The Odyssey
During this episode, the reason why Yao Fei wanted to remain on the island, and knocked out Oliver was because he didn't want to risk the life of his daughter. Near the end of the flashback, Yao Fei is given five minutes to see his daughter.[5]
Abilities
- Master marksman: Yao Fei is an expert marksman, portrayed through outstanding precision with his signature bow and arrow.
- Master archer: Yao Fei is displayed as a master archer and marksman who can effectively use the bow and arrow like Oliver Queen. In fact, his greater experience in archery as well as providing Oliver with mentorship on the skill may prove his superiority in comparison to him.
- Peak of human physical condition: Yao Fei has show to be in top physical condition for a man of his age.
- Master hand-to-hand combatant: In addition to his excellence in far-ranged abilities, Fei has proven his proficiency in close-ranged hand to hand combat likewise. This is constantly proven by his ability to take down various armed men, including the mercenary Deathstroke.
Equipment
- Bow and arrows: Yao Fei's signature weapons of choice, he demonstrates his mastery of this weapon many times.
- Quiver: Fei uses his quiver to carry his arrows, as does Oliver.
Trivia
- Yao Fei gave Oliver his first scar.
- Yao Fei, in the DC Comics Universe, is a superhero known as Accomplished Perfect Physician, and a member of the Great Ten, a team of Chinese superheroes. There is also another member of that team known as the "Celestial Archer", who like Yao Fei in Arrow, is a master archer. This version of Yao Fei seems to combine the abilities of both Great Ten members.
- At the conclusion of the episode "Trust but Verify " it is revealed that Yao Fei is now in the employment of Edward Fyers, and was the soldier who spoke to Oliver when he eventually found his way back the headquarters. It is unclear however, if Yao truly betrayed Oliver.
- However in the episode Vertigo, it is revealed in a flashback, that Fei helped Oliver escape from Edward Fyers; he accomplished this by using a grip to fake Oliver's death. In the present day Oliver uses the same technique to fake the death of a man who had betrayed the Bratva after the leader requested Oliver kill the man in exchange for his trust
- The reason he is in the employment of Fyers is to protect his daughter, Shado. And Fyers wants him to teach archery to his soldiers for an unknown reason.
- His green hood is currently worn by Oliver as the Starling City vigilante.
- Oliver confirms that Yao Fei does train him on the island, answering Diggle's question on where he learned to fight with sticks, "His name was Yao Fei." This means that some tume later Yao Fei doesn train Oliver to become the master archer he is.
- Oliver and Yao Fei share a signature move, grippin their opponent with their legs and throwing them.
